Imfene is the Xhosa word for baboon.

Xhosa is a Nguni language, indigenous to Southern Africa and one of the official languages of South Africa. It is spoken as a first language by approximately 8 million people and as a second language in South Africa, particularly in the Cape Province. It has perhaps the heaviest functional load of click consonants in a Bantu language, with one count finding that 10% of basic vocabulary items contained a click.

I have spent the last 3 weeks living in Rooi Els and Muizenberg.

Rooi Els has a resident troop of 23 baboons.

Within Overstrand municipal area, there are approximately 14 troops of varying sizes comprising about 450 animals in total. The most prominent troops are in Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond, Onrus, Hermanus Heights, Fernkloof and Voelklip

As of June 2024, the total count for the baboon troops on the Cape Peninsula outside of the Cape Point section of Table Mountain National Park is 518 individuals.

At Cape Point there are five distinct troops: [1] Cape Point [2] Buffels Bay [3] Kanonkop [4] Klein Olifantsbosch [5] Groot Olifansbosch. They range from between 14 to over 30 members per troop. The largest troop currently is the Kanonkop troop.
