Bob Woodward: Trump is waging a ‘war on truth’
Journalist and author Bob Woodward said Monday that President Trump has waged a “war on truth.”
A day ahead of the release of his highly talked about book, “Fear: Trump in the White House,” Woodward defended himself against claims that accounts should be discredited because they are from anonymous sources.
“There’s a war on truth by [Trump],” Woodward told the “Today” show Monday. “He says, ‘Oh, these are unnamed sources,’ but these are not unnamed incidents.”
Woodward said White House chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis were not telling the truth when they denied saying what he quoted them as saying in the book.
“They are not telling the truth,” Woodward said. “The truth emerges, but sometimes it takes time. These are political statements to protect their jobs.”
He also said that despite the majority of the book coming from unnamed sources, he reiterated that the incidents are real.
“The incidents are not anonymous,” Woodward said. “It gives a date, it gives a time, who participates, most often the president himself and what he says.”
Woodward, who has covered multiple administrations, said he has never seen a president who is as “detached from reality” as Trump.
“I’ve never seen an instance when the president is so detached from the reality of what’s going on,” Woodward said.
